How I Met My Best Friend.
I can vividly picture this memory in my head, for it is a special one to me. It was the day I met my best friend, Steven Guido.
It was 1st Grade, and I was excited for it was the first time I was in a “grade” before. I quickly glanced around to see if there was anyone I knew back in Kindergarten, and there were many. I spoke with them and we discussed about our summer activities. After speaking with all of them, I looked down at the desks to see where I would be sitting, and who I would be sitting next to. I peered at all of the name tags, and finally found mine. To the right of my desk was a boy, sitting down by himself and quietly examining the classroom. I was afraid to speak to him, for I hadn’t known him yet, but my mom, who saw me staring at him at the time, urged for me to introduce myself. I nervously pulled out my little chair and sat down next to him.
Finally I said:
“Hi.”
He turned, noticing that someone was speaking to him, and said hello to me.
“I’m Khiem.”
“I’m Steven.”
I quickly wanted to continue the conversation, so I quickly thought of something that came to my mind.
“Uh. Do you like cars?” I said.
“Yeh,” he replied quickly.
There was an awkward pause. Finally, Steven spoke.
“Do you like kittens?” he asked.
Quickly, my reaction was “No.” I’m allergic to cats; whenever I stand or live near a cat, my lungs start to swell and I soon face severe asthma problems within a few hours. I still remember the time when I was five, and I had an asthma attack while at a parent’s friend’s party. That was a horrible experience. Although, I hated cats in general (his cat is nice though, h3h3), I still said what was right.
“Yeah.” I replied.
And that’s how it started. To this day, I have been keeping in touch with Steven frequently, despite the two of us going to different schools. His birthday is actually coming up, September 10, so I decided to write about him.
So yeah, a great friendship can start with a lie.
And thanks Mom, for giving me the confidence to speak to him.
